News Flash: Gate.com merges with Hostway
Jack in Boca Raton writes in: What is your opinion on Gate.com and do you have any Gate.com user feedback you could provide me?
Our answer: Our Gate.com opinion is generally favorable. Those looking for Gate can find their website by visiting www.gate.com. The web host company has been a long-standing hosting provider, originally called HostSave, that offers a broad range of web hosting services. In 2007, Gate.com was acquired by Hostway (read press release here). Gate.com and Gate are two names that are often used interchangeably, so people talking about either are usually referencing the same company. Gate.net is owned by Earthlink but does not act as a standalone hosting service. As far as user feedback on Gate.com, it too has generally been favorable, although some of complained about outages. With the recent purchase of Gate.com by Hostway, we believe it is likely that the Gate.com customer base will experience an uptick in quality since HostIndex.com has high regards for Hostway.
The one thing that has been commented to us is that Gate.com is not as competitive on a feature-set basis as some other web hosting providers are. That is not to say that Gate.com doesn't receive positive user feedback or that the smaller account package specs has caused a large volume of negative user feedback, but emails have been sent to us about it. Gate.com is often compared to other low cost web hosting products including BlueHost, HostMonster, and IX Web Hosting. We have consolidated the data for their entry level web hosting plans for each in the table below.
Overall, you should find the quality of Gate.com to be above average when compared to its peers. In addition, a comparison of Gate.com against the broader hosting industry will still show that their web hosting plans deliver strong value for the dollar. That said, we feel compelled to share with you the fact that, at least as this date of response to your question, the Gate.com product specs are lower than what you can get elsewhere for the same or less money. The quantity of features that you need is probably a key factor that will either affirm or suggest otherwise a purchase decision.
